 Snapshots are one of the most interesting versions of Minecraft released by the creators to allow interested users to try out new features. They're exclusively accessible for Java Edition, and they're easy to install via the launcher.

On October 7, 2021, the Minecraft 1.18 21w40a snapshot was published. Major changes to how ores are created have been made in this snapshot, which will have a big impact on the player's mining experience.


Copper ores now drop 2-5 raw copper objects when mined. It used to just drop 2-3 in earlier versions. This will have a big impact on how much raw copper you get after a long mining session.

For this mechanism, the following adjustments have been made:

  • Coal ore is found between Y levels 0 and 248. Between 0 and 192, there is a reduction in air exposure. At higher Y levels, it generates the most. Copper ore has a temperature range of -16 to 112. At Y 48, it generates the most. Ore of lapis lazuli: -64 to 64 degrees Celsius. Exposed lapis lazuli ore will produce between -32 and 32 degrees Celsius. A large portion of it occurs at or around Y -2. In mountain biomes, emerald ore ranges from -16 to about 248. The more emeralds are generated, the higher the Y level.
  • Gold ore: -64 to 32 degrees Celsius. Y -16 creates a lot of it. Iron ore: -64 to 72 degrees Celsius. It begins to generate again around 80 and continues to do so until it reaches approximately 248. Redstone ore is found in the range of -64 to 16. The gamer should discover more the lower they go. Diamond ore has a hardness of -64 to 16. The lower the player descends, the more diamonds they should discover, similar to the example above.


Deepslate emerald and copper ore types are now naturally produced in the game.

This was not mentioned in the patch notes for Minecraft 1.18 snapshot 21w40a. Minecraft creator Henrik Kniberg, on the other hand, tweeted that deepslate copper and emerald ore are now available in survival mode.

The quantity of unexposed and spontaneously produced diamond ores was decreased a few snapshots ago because diamonds seemed too accessible to some players.

However, additional unexposed diamond ores have been included in this snapshot. Exploration mining, according to Henrik Kniberg, should be unaffected. Branch mining, on the other hand, may yield more diamonds. On average, it appears to be on par with Minecraft 1.17.


The Minecraft community will undoubtedly be outraged by these changes to mineral distribution. Snapshots, on the other hand, have always been a good method to test new features in the game.
